Met de Russische invasie van 2008 verdween een groot deel van Irakli Sabekia‘s thuisland Georgië, inclusief zijn geboortestad, achter een hek van prikkeldraad. De interactieve installatie ‘Voicing Borders’ toont de realiteit van deze bezetting. Door een schaduw op de projectie te werpen onthul je de locatie van vernietigde dorpen. Sabekia ontwierp ook een radiozender die het hek gebruikt als antenne om een bericht in morsecode uit te zenden, dat ontvangen kan worden door gewone radio’s: de namen en coördinaten van verdwenen dorpen.

De constructie van de bezetter verandert zo in een middel voor subversief protest.

Since the Russian invasion of 2008, a razor wire fence cuts off much of Irakli Sabekia‘s homeland Georgia, including his place of birth. In his interactive installation ‘Voicing Borders’, Sabekia reveals the reality of the occupation. By casting a shadow on the projection, you can unveil the location of destroyed villages. He also designed a radio transmitter that uses the fence as an antenna to broadcast a short Morse code message, broadcast on a frequency of conventional radio receivers: the names and coordinates of disappeared villages.

This subversive transformation turns the very weapon of occupation into a tool for voicing objection to it.
